About us

Trainers first. Teachers always.

Apex Dog Training was built around one conviction: a dog is only as reliable as the person holding the leash. So we train both.

Our approach

Customized training, proofed in the real world

Every dog arrives with a different temperament, drive and history, and every household has different rules. We start by understanding both, then build a training plan for that specific dog and that specific owner, instead of running every dog through the same protocol.

Obedience is only useful if it holds when it matters: at the front door, on a busy sidewalk, near other dogs, when a distraction shows up out of nowhere. That is where we take the training, deliberately and progressively.

And because the dog goes home with you, we spend real time on your handling: timing, communication, structure and the daily routines that keep the results in place long after training ends.

The team

Your lead trainers

Two trainers, two specialisms, one standard. Between them, twenty years of work with dogs that other programs find difficult.

Juan Guzman

Lead Trainer

High-drive dogs · Obedience

Five years working with high-drive dogs, with a particular focus on the Cane Corso. Juan builds the obedience foundation and is the day-to-day contact for owners in training.

James Ramirez

Lead Trainer

Behavior · Aggression cases

Fifteen years on behavior work, specialising in the difficult end of it: aggression and the cases that other trainers decline. James takes the assessments that need an honest answer rather than an easy one.

Our method

In our own words

I adapt to the dog's traits and focus on three key points: drive, motivation and character, and build off that. The tools I use are slip leads, prong collars and e-collars when appropriate — but the tool isn't what trains a dog. It's how it's introduced, conditioned and used. The goal is to create clear communication, structure and accountability, while building a dog that understands what's expected of them in real-world scenarios.

Juan Guzman, Lead Trainer

If you are unsure about any tool, ask us before you book. We will explain exactly how and when it is used, and why. If it is not right for your dog, we will say so.
